The Daily Show came back on the air a few days after September 11th, 2001. I remember where I was that day during my freshman year of college and luckily I was able to spend that day with my dad who came to visit me. Rather than remember the day, watch this clip of John Stewart and you don't even have to pay attention to what he says but rather the emotion that he displays.
" Sorry I haven't been posting as much as I would like, my "real world" responsibilities have really forced my blogging to take a back seat for a little bit. I expect to be back on schedule with multiple posts in the near future. [frank]
This is easily the best thing I have seen in a while and I laughed out loud at multiple parts. You see if you were a kid around my age and you were even remotly cool, you knew how to play at least two video games on the Nintendo 64. One was Goldeneye and they other was Mario Kart.
Hopefully you enjoy this video and hopefully these guys make some more good stuff in the near future.
The dog days of this deathly summer are continuing today with the news that John Hughes died at the age of 59 of an apparent heart attack. I remember as a child of the 80's growing up watching his classics teen comedies like Sixteen Candles, Ferris Buellers Day Off, and The Breakfast Club. He has had his hand in quite a few movies of note and frankly I feel like he re-imagined the entire sub-genre of high-school dramedies.
The 90's were a bit harder on Hughes although he did have some hits in the Home Alone series, but he was never really able to achieve the same sort of relevance in pop-culture. This summer has been brutal for celelbrity deaths and they have even killed off some of the cool guys like Billie Mays and John Hughes. Sad.
Anyways, while most people will be remembering Hughes for his work on those 80's classics I will leave you with a clip from the original National Lampoon's Vacation; which Hughes wrote the screenplay for:
I try to stay away from news that really only affects me, but I thought this was worth the exception to policy. Hell, it's my blog, I can make whatever rules I want.
Today marks the official announcement that my favorite radio station is switching formats from "guy-talk" to all sports talk. It's a sad day for fans of the Mike O' Meara show and it's a sad day for fans of guy-talk radio. Mike O'Meara has a been a D.C. staple for over 20 years mainly as a part of the nationally syndicated Don and Mike Show, but for the past year and a half he has headlined his own show. The Mike O'Meara show was not my favorite on the channel that would be by far the morning show, The Junkies. But still Mike and his crew took me home every evening on my 35 mile commute and it was good to listen to their brand of wise-ass guy-talk while trying to navigate the hell on earth that is Washington D.C. traffic.
Talk radio in general is going the way of the Dodo Bird thank to gross mismanagement by the big companies like Clear Channel and the culprits in this horrible decision, CBS radio. But it's not all Big Radio's fault but certainly some of the blame must fall on them. The biggest villain in this adventure is the FCC and the American public for allowing the government to dictate their assine rules about what can and can't be said on the radio thank to Janet Jackson's exposed tit. We the public are not free of guilt for allowing talk radio to crumble and move all quality radio programing to satellite radio. We allowed the FCC to take any and all freedom that the talk radio show hosts had and censor them to a point where their creativity was stifled beyond recognition. Thanks a lot Justin Timberlake.
I grew up somewhat near Buffalo, NY but not close enough to get their stations signals and my radio experience as a kid was full of college radio, dumpy local oldies, classic rock, and country stations. Occasionally while traveling I would catch a glimpse of the Howard Stern Show and always loved to hear him create a controversy or interview a homeless guy, or just do something generally absurd or mean-spirited. But it wasn't until I moved to the D.C. area that I really started to listen to talk radio. Elliot in the Morning, The Junkies, Big O' & Dukes, The Sports Reporters, The John Thompson Shown, The John Riggins Show...the D.C. area was saturated with a variety of quality talk radio and sports talk radio programs and I quickly stopped listening to music in the car and started to prefer the sounds of talk radio much more.
It's a sad day that one of the longest standing members of talk-radio is now without a radio home, especially since he played by the rules, followed the FCC guidelines and still winds up on his ass. Hopefully the gang from the Mike O' Meara, and Oscar from the Big O & Dukes Show will land on their feat with solid new radio homes and freedom to get back to doing what they do best, entertaining the masses. So anyways R.I.P. WJFK as we all knew it and welcome the new Line-up of 1067 The Fan.
I started watching the first season of True Blood this weekend and if the first two episodes of the show are any indication Alan Ball (Creator of Six Feat Under) and H.B.O. have another slam dunk show on their hands. Interesting and mysterious story lines with sex, drugs, and humor mixed in to make it worthwhile. My only complaint is the lead actress, Ana Paquin, is ugly and a bit annoying. But I digress as there is enough other stuff going on that I can get past it. Not to mention H.B.O really lucked out with their timing since the Twilight series has really made Vampires all the rage with the kids these days.
Major Movie studios love to take anything that we remember as a child and try to rehash it and capitalize on it, regardless if it tarnishes the original for the rest of mankind. This time it is one of the earliest movies I have a recollection of, The Karate Kid. Here's an article from yahoo talking about the upcoming abomonation.
I went and saw the movie "Up" this weekend and was thoroughly impressed. I will have a full review later this week, but while I thought it was a great movie for adults, I am wondering how this movie along with last years "Wall-E" are managing to keep children entertained with complex story lines and minimal dialog.
About two weeks ago TCM did an all day marathon of Alfred Hitchock movies and Mrs. Milkshake and I watched about 5 or 6 of his movies over the next week or so through the magic of DVR. I had never seen "Notorious" or "The Man Who Knew to Much", but I was very impressed and have been re-invergorated for the works of Alfred Hitchock. Flickering Myth Movie Blog decided to rank their top 5 Hitchock films and mine would be very close.
5. The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) 4. Vertigo 3. North By Northwest 2. Rear Window 1. Psycho
As part of the Monday Media Mix Tape (Even on a Tuesday) I will highlight a trailer for an upcoming movie that I am excited or interested in. This week will be the trailer for the upcoming Quentin Tarintino movie, "Inglourious Basterds." Brad Pitt has been making solid career choices for a while and even if you like to bash Tarintino for his unoriginality, I have a hard time believing anyone who says his movies aren't at least entertaining. Anyways check it out, can't wait till August 21st.
In August I will be going to a concert at the venue Wolftrap for the first time with Mama & Papa Milkshake, and Mrs. Milkshake to see Crosby, Stills, and Nash. (Neil Young sadly won't be with them again and I've have yet to get a chance to check him out live). Anyways; Rolling Stone Magazine has a nice little preview on what I can expect when I check them out and also shed a few more details on their very secreative new album with legendary producer Rick Rubin.
Death won' quit and I felt I should highlight the fact that Karl Malden died last week and inbetween the coverage of Michael Jackson, Farah Fawcett, and Billy Mays, little to no time was devoted to this oscar winning actor. I'm not going to claim I am an authority on him, but if you like classic movies, he has definetly been in his fair share, A Street Car Named Desire, On the Waterfront, Patton, and Birdman of Alcatraz. Tune into TCM for a special on July 10th highlighting his work.
Again, Death is trying its hardest to crush humanity to it's core, this time the target is the infamous Tom Green. As of this posting he is not yet dead, but rather in critical condition after a car accident. "The Tom Green Show" was actually pretty groundbreaking if you think about the status of television these days with reality TV and over the top nonsense dominating the airwaves his work should probably be re-watched to see if it holds up. I remeber laughing hysterically at this as a kid. [Editors Note: Apparantly, Tom Green's website was hacked yesterday and the whole car accident thing was made up. The video below is still funny though]
I'm going to try a new segmant to round up some of the best and most interesting stories from around the world of music, TV, and music each week. It shall be nothing more than a glorfied link-dump with a few snide and not as funny as I think they are remarks about the news of mass media. Enjoy!
So Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen made around 201 million dollars since it's opening on Wednesday. Quite impressive considering the piss poor reviews it has been getting. I have to admit that I saw the first Transformers movie at my house on my TV with little to no expectations and I loved every minute of it. I in fact wanted to hate the movie but it was too darn charming and entertaining. I actually was going to see the sequal on the big screen but since the reviews are panning it, I will stick to the low expectations TV viewing for the second one as well.
Michael Jackson, Billy Mays, Ed McMahon, and Farah Fawcett all died last week. Sadly, Billy Mays was quite possibly the only one that was still going to contribute anything meaningful to society. May's obituary will be written in all capital letters and filled with exclamaiton points. R.I.P. to all four.
Michael Mann tends to piss me off, he takes ideas for movies that look completly bad-ass to me and then turns them into underwhelming and overly long flicks. Some exceptions were Collateral, (and I may be the only person on the face of the planet that enjoyed it but,) Miami Vice. I am hoping Public Enemies is really good cause there hasn't been anything out lately that's been decent. Also, doesn't it seem like Johnny Depp hasn't been in a movie in years?
So Artie Lange went on sportscaster Joe Buck's new show, "Joe Buck Live", and created some controversy by acting like a jack-ass last night. I for one am a confused on a few levels by all the controversy it created and one question I have is why every thinks it was a train wreck? The segment shown below and the additional segment that can be watched over at Deadspin, were both hilarious, awkward, and quality television. (BOTH VIDEOS HAVE NSFW LANGUAGE)
Sure, the topic the three actors were there to discuss was how sports and celebrity are intertwined and related and the topic was never explored but it was still entertaining. The second reason is what in blue blazes did the producers think they were getting themselves into when they booked Artie Lange? He is an outspoken, vulgar, and often hilarious comedian that has no restraint especially now that he has been mixing it up with Howard Stern on uncensored radio for years. You put him on live uncensored television with a weak host and Lange will take over, just like he did. (MORE AFTER THE JUMP)
I originally saw the first trailer for "The Hangover" over a month ago, and knew immediately that I wanted to see it. I was slightly worried that it would be one of those movies that all the funny parts are in the preview, but the clip that I saw made me laugh out loud which is a rare occurrence for me in the coming attractions.
Then I found out it was directed by Todd Phillips, the same man that wrote and directed "Old School". Old School is easily one of my favorite comedies of all time despite being a simple movie. The plot is definitely not complex, but the cast and writers were able to elevate a simple premise with dark and irreverent humor expertly written and delivered.
The first time I saw the movie I knew that I was going to love it before the opening credits were finished because of two of the best jokes in the entire movie. The first was the dad smacking his son in the back of his head as Luke Wilson looks on disbelief while passing the dysfunctional family on an escalator. The other was after Luke Wilson asks a taxi driver, "Sir, my seat belt appears to be broken. What do you suggest I do?" The driver succinctly tells Wilson, "I suggest you quit being such a faggot." I know it's sophomoric but I never claimed to be sophisticated by any means and the brutal joke sets the stage for the "nothing sacred" motif that the rest of the movie follows.
This success creates a problem for The Hangover that Old School didn't suffer from; expectations. One of the main reasons that I and so many others enjoyed Old School so much was because there was very little hype surrounding it. Phillips' only other directorial accomplishment was "Road Trip" which was somewhat entertaining but not nearly funny enough to merit excitement for follow on features. Old School changed that.
Happy Monday. I wanted to share with you all a pretty funny observation from the blog "Serious Lunch", they noticed that the new background to "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien" looks an awful lot like the old Super Mario Brothers' video games. This picture shows the simaliries but make sure to check out their post on the topic, as well as the video that Conan featured on his show after he heard about Serious Lunch's observation.
