I try to stay away from news that really only affects me, but I thought this was worth the exception to policy. Hell, it's my blog, I can make whatever rules I want.
Today marks the official announcement that my favorite radio station is switching formats from "guy-talk" to all sports talk. It's a sad day for fans of the Mike O' Meara show and it's a sad day for fans of guy-talk radio. Mike O'Meara has a been a D.C. staple for over 20 years mainly as a part of the nationally syndicated Don and Mike Show, but for the past year and a half he has headlined his own show. The Mike O'Meara show was not my favorite on the channel that would be by far the morning show, The Junkies. But still Mike and his crew took me home every evening on my 35 mile commute and it was good to listen to their brand of wise-ass guy-talk while trying to navigate the hell on earth that is Washington D.C. traffic.
Talk radio in general is going the way of the Dodo Bird thank to gross mismanagement by the big companies like Clear Channel and the culprits in this horrible decision, CBS radio. But it's not all Big Radio's fault but certainly some of the blame must fall on them. The biggest villain in this adventure is the FCC and the American public for allowing the government to dictate their assine rules about what can and can't be said on the radio thank to Janet Jackson's exposed tit. We the public are not free of guilt for allowing talk radio to crumble and move all quality radio programing to satellite radio. We allowed the FCC to take any and all freedom that the talk radio show hosts had and censor them to a point where their creativity was stifled beyond recognition. Thanks a lot Justin Timberlake.
I grew up somewhat near Buffalo, NY but not close enough to get their stations signals and my radio experience as a kid was full of college radio, dumpy local oldies, classic rock, and country stations. Occasionally while traveling I would catch a glimpse of the Howard Stern Show and always loved to hear him create a controversy or interview a homeless guy, or just do something generally absurd or mean-spirited. But it wasn't until I moved to the D.C. area that I really started to listen to talk radio. Elliot in the Morning, The Junkies, Big O' & Dukes, The Sports Reporters, The John Thompson Shown, The John Riggins Show...the D.C. area was saturated with a variety of quality talk radio and sports talk radio programs and I quickly stopped listening to music in the car and started to prefer the sounds of talk radio much more.
It's a sad day that one of the longest standing members of talk-radio is now without a radio home, especially since he played by the rules, followed the FCC guidelines and still winds up on his ass. Hopefully the gang from the Mike O' Meara, and Oscar from the Big O & Dukes Show will land on their feat with solid new radio homes and freedom to get back to doing what they do best, entertaining the masses.
