So Artie Lange went on sportscaster Joe Buck's new show, "Joe Buck Live", and created some controversy by acting like a jack-ass last night. I for one am a confused on a few levels by all the controversy it created and one question I have is why every thinks it was a train wreck? The segment shown below and the additional segment that can be watched over at Deadspin, were both hilarious, awkward, and quality television. (BOTH VIDEOS HAVE NSFW LANGUAGE)
Sure, the topic the three actors were there to discuss was how sports and celebrity are intertwined and related and the topic was never explored but it was still entertaining. The second reason is what in blue blazes did the producers think they were getting themselves into when they booked Artie Lange? He is an outspoken, vulgar, and often hilarious comedian that has no restraint especially now that he has been mixing it up with Howard Stern on uncensored radio for years. You put him on live uncensored television with a weak host and Lange will take over, just like he did. (MORE AFTER THE JUMP)
Now the one thing that was disappointing is we didn't get to hear Paul Rudd's thoughts on the actual topic as Rudd is always funny and slick. The other guest, Jason Sudeikis was very quiet throughout the interview which was disappointing as well since he is one of the few bright spots on an otherwise giant stinking turd that is called Saturday Night Live these days. The one time Sudeikis did pipe up was in the overtime section you can see at Deadspin when Lange attacks Sudeikis for toiling away at SNL and Sudeikis has a nice crack about Artie living inside Howard Sterns' ass. You could actually tell that Rudd and Sudeikis would love for Artie to shut the hell up, even though they had no way to shut him up. Rudd seemed the most uncomfortable which likely was a result of his close and long standing relationship with Joe Buck. Nobody wants to see a close friend shrink into misery before your eyes.
I also find it amusing that if you told anyone yesterday afternoon that the big news from "Joe Buck Live's" premier wasn't the much hyped Brett Favre interview but rather Artie Lange; most people would have said, who the hell is Artie Lange? Some might say Artie Lange the fat guy from Howard Stern? Or the big drunk drug addict that was in Dirty Work? Regardless the producers of the show booked Lange for a reason, they knew how off the wall Lange could be and they used him as a back-up plan in case the Favre and OchoCinco interviews failed to stir anything up. If Favre had dropped a bombshell about how much he hates Ted Thompson and the Packers, or that he was playing for revenge nobody would be talking about the final segment with Artie Lange. Once again mass media trys to spin that it is spontanous and unopridictible when reality is it's controlled and calculated. HBO and Joe Buck have set himself up for higher ratings next week, not to mention all the publicity the two viral videos' will draw and of course we can't forget the potential re-match between Artie Lange and Joe Buck that is sure to occur in the near future. Artie Lange said on Howard Stern that the producers egged him on, in fact his exact quote was a bit more vulgar:
"And Ross Greenburg, you mother f-cker, you came up to me and said, ‘If [fellow panelists] Paul [Rudd] and Jason [Sudeikis] get boring, you go nuts.' So go f-ck yourself, I don't care how important you are in this business."
The saddest part is I am just as guilty as everyone else; I was entertained, I'm spreading viral marketing for his show (to all 4 people who might read this, (thanks dad)), and more importantly for Mr. Buck; I will be watching his show in the future. My TIVO will be set for Lang vs. Buck II.

I tuned into Buck Live for the Favre interview, but the highlight was the Artie Lange bit. Joe should thank him for spicing up the show and not take it personally. I'm sure they (the producers) knew what they were getting into, anyway. On a side note, I thought it was funny to hear Favre say 'sh!t' in an interview. Probably the only good thing in that interview.
This is a good take on the situation. I found the link from @dymilkshake twitter. Follow me @chrisfabbott.

Thanks for stopping by...(dymilkshake is my twitter)...I went ahead and requested to follow you. I really like Joe Buck, but the show was rather boring without the Artie Lang situation...some of the stuff that popped out of his mouth was hilarous...the response to Joe Buck saying his favorite website was TMZ was insane.

I'm gonna be the pussy of the group, I guess, and say that Lang was kind of out of line. I mean...yes, I expected him to be a total blowhard and swear and whatever to get laughs. That's his schtick. But...a good comedian can get the laughs AND stick to the topic. I love that of the three adjectives Frank used to describe him..."often hilarious" was the third. He's a comedian. He should be hilarious first. Oh well. That's just my opinion. I've never been a fan of the the "awkward/uncomfortable" humor.
But, that aside. Buck was a little weak in his ability to control the show. I think as soon as it went off script, he became a little boy who forgot his lines in the Christmas Play. He pushed Chad Johnson and got NOWHERE! I mean...he got out spoken by Michael Irvin! He does CRACK! haha....
Here's one thing that kind of made me mad. Artie brought up Joe's old man....without being prompted to. Now, he DID pay nothing but respect to him..but, had I been Buck (my dad is passed too), and Artie Lang had just disrespected me so mercilessly, the second "Your dad..." came out of his mouth...I would have had my fist in his throat and my foot in his ass before he got the next word out.

Oh...and Frank, it's not Weekly. Sorry, man. It's only 4 times a year...and I doubt Lang will be on the next one. Also...why the hell is this show live? Why does it NEED to be live? There is no Audience Participation or any other reason this show needs to be seen as it's being filmed. I guess...the only reason anyone would tune in to watch Joe Buck squirm in Bob Costas' shoes is for the "something might go wrong" factor. Which...JACKPOT! I don't know. I think Lang was too much. WHY book him? What's the point? You don't think you're going to get enough entertainment out of Paul "I make my living doing improv" Rudd and Jason "I go out LIVE everyweek" Sudeikis? You think the producers wanted ratings? Well...if this works..and they book Lang for the second instalment, yeah..they may get ratings. But, if Lang comes out again and DESTROYS Buck, no one is going to tune into Round 3. The people that find it funny are gonna get bored with watching Buck get teabagged like a kid on the playground, and sports fans are going to lose respect for the credibility of the show.

all good calls dan...
Don't actually have HBO, so sheeplishly I have to admit I didn't know enough about the show's schedule....
I don't disagree that Artie was out of line, but that is why you book a character like him, if you don't expect him to be out of line don't put him on your show and don't tell him to go crazy if things get dry.
I agree with you; if their are only four episodes the chances of Artie coming back are slim to none....weekly show for 12 or 13 epidsodes I figured Joe would want a shot at getting back at him...

So that leaves a few questions:
WHY book him? They had the entertainment value covered with Rudd. They had the attention covered by being Farve's first interview since the Viking story broke. And..it's a network that has Katie Morgan hosting a show about sex toys while completely nude. So, I dont think they needed the controversy!
WHY is this show live?
WHY is Sudeikis doing all these "correspondant/panelist" gigs? He's funny. Jump in a movie (i.e. Bill Hader) and try to get famous that way.
